Short description of the location, geographical position:
Premnitz is a little town in the Havelland district, in Brandenburg, Germany. It is situated on the river Havel in the nature park Westhavelland, the biggest nature park in Brandenburg. Moreover is situated 8 km south of Rathenow and 21 km northwest of Brandenburg, 65km west of Berlin. Quite near is the nature reserve “Untere Havel”.
Premnitz have about 9500 inhabitants. The development of the town is close connected with the chemical industry since 1915. But the rate of unemployment increased since 1990.
During the last years Premnitz was brought up to date and brightened up, for example a new marketplace, Street Park, the Steinbogen bridge, sculptures and others.
Premnitz is a good starting point for cycle tours, for going on walk, for water sport or for going fishing.
Our river – brief description:
The Havel is a 325km long river in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, Berlin and Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It is a tributary river of the river Elbe.
In earlier Greek or Latin sources, for example in Tacitus‘ Germania the name of the river was also written as Habola, Habula, Havela .The river name Havel is related to German Haff, habe, hafen, MHG Hafen meaning port, harbor.
The spring of the Havel is located in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern between Lake Müritz and the city of Neubrandenburg. In its upper part and between Berlin and Brandenburg the river forms several lakes. The region around and in the north of the central part of the Havel is called Havelland. It consists of sandy hills and low marshes. On the last few kilometers the Havel flows in the territory of Saxony-Anhalt, where she flows into the Elbe near by Havelberg. From spring to mouth it is only 41meters difference of high.
The biggest part of the river is drive on by ships. The depth and the flowing of the water are adjusted by means of weirs and locks.
In the next 13 years, the “Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU)” and other organisations will join forces to restore the lower Havel river valley. It is the largest and most important non-coastal wetlands area in Central Europe.
Now the Havel will be a natural river and habitat for the characteristic plants and animals of a river landscape. The project not only benefits nature and water protection, but also offers opportunities for development in the entire region.
Our expectations for the outcome of the project:
We would like to make new experiences and we would like to do school in another way for one week. Moreover we would like to prove our English knowledge and would like to see other regions and to become acquainted with other pupils from other schools. We look forward to do common activities and of course to the freetime we will have.
Our suggestions/campaign proposals:
campfire, sporting event, canoe
